03 — PROGRAMMES

What we teach.

All ages, all stages — from first lesson to advanced repertoire.

Every programme below is one-to-one unless noted. Lessons are in person at our Carramar studios, on a school-term calendar. We bill per term (most families) or per lesson (if your schedule is irregular).

STOCK · Child at piano, teacher's hands guiding

Piano

From age 5 · 30, 45 or 60 minutes · AMEB · Trinity

Our flagship discipline and the instrument most of our students learn. Lessons start at thirty minutes for younger children and grow to forty-five or sixty minutes for senior students working through Grade 5 and above. We teach the classical canon as the core, with room for jazz, contemporary, and student-chosen repertoire as motivation requires.

If your family has a digital piano or upright at home, you’re set. We can advise on what to buy if not.

STOCK · Young violinist with quarter-size instrument

Violin

From age 7 · 30 or 45 minutes · AMEB

Violin starts a touch later than piano because the instrument requires both physical readiness and a particular kind of patience. We teach in the Suzuki and Australian methods, with fractional instruments (1/8, 1/4, 1/2) for younger learners. Hire arrangements available through nearby retailers.

STOCK · Acoustic guitar lesson, casual studio setting

Guitar

From age 8 · 30 or 45 minutes · classical · contemporary

Classical and contemporary streams. Beginners start on a small acoustic guitar; we move to electric or steel-string acoustic from intermediate level onwards, depending on the student’s direction. Open to pop, blues, fingerstyle, and the canonical repertoire.

STOCK · Voice lesson, music stand and warm light

Singing

From age 9 · 30 minutes · AMEB Voice grading available

Voice is a delicate instrument and we start when the young vocal mechanism is ready. Repertoire ranges from musical theatre to art song to contemporary popular, chosen with the student. Senior students work through AMEB Voice grades and prepare audition material for school musicals and Performing Arts admission.

STOCK · Student with flute, focused

Flute

From age 8 · 30 minutes

We start flute when small hands can comfortably hold and support the instrument. Curved-head flutes are recommended for the youngest beginners. Strong cross-over with school ensemble programmes — many of our flute students play in their school’s wind ensemble or stage band.

STOCK · Keyboard, student finding their way

Keyboard

From age 5 · 30 minutes

A flexible entry point. If your family isn’t ready to commit to a full piano at home, a 61-key weighted keyboard can carry a beginner for the first six to twelve months. We transition students to piano when they’re ready — usually around when sustain pedal and full-octave repertoire start to matter.

STOCK · Theory exercise book, pencil, focused student

Music Theory

Standalone · AMEB Theory of Music

Theory lessons run alongside practical study or as standalone preparation for AMEB Grade 5 Theory or higher (often a prerequisite for senior practical grades). Eleanor runs our theory programme and our students consistently score in the upper bands.

STOCK · Group musicianship class, kids in a circle

Musicianship

Group classes · Saturdays

Aural training, sight-singing, rhythm work, and the listening skills exams require. Available as part of practical lessons (built into the weekly lesson) or as Saturday-morning group classes for students sitting senior AMEB or HSC Music. Strongly recommended for anyone aiming at Grade 6 and beyond.

About exams: we prepare students for AMEB and Trinity College London exams in every discipline above. The decision to sit an exam is always the family’s — some students thrive with structure, others bloom without it. More about our exam preparation →
